Star Rentals Shuttered by California Dept. of Real Estate

Star Rentals, a rental service listing company located in Downey, was shut down in late September after its operator, Laura Tucker, was served with and Order to Desist and Refrain.

Complaints to NBC4’s “I-Team” apparently triggered an undercover investigation during which NBC sent in two employees to pose as renters to Star Rentals. An employee at Star charged them $150 and gave them eight rental listings. Five turned out to be not for rent and the remainder were above what the “renters” had told Star Rentals they could afford. When the renters asked for a refund of their money, it was refused.

Phil Ihde, a spokesman for the California Department of Real Estate, referred to the business practices of Star Rentals as ““ misrepresentation on the surface. It’s fraud and dishonest dealing at its heart.”
